Starting with Honors Classes that Led to Competitive STEM Professions

Almost ten years ago while receiving tutoring from Marcella Powell, she told me about Honors Classes and introduced me to Dr. Paris Svoronos who registered me to take Honors General Chemistry Honors I. I believe the class and the mentoring of Dr. Svoronos directed me to a path of various beneficial experiences. I also took Calculus and Biology Honors classes giving me an enhanced experience that made me a better thinker and more confident. Thanks to the support of Dr. Patricia Schneider and Dr. Svoronos, I was able to conduct scientific research through the “Bridges to the Future” program at QCC, participate in numerous conferences where I received awards, became aware of internship opportunities, and have leadership experiences as being part of the President’s Council and President of the Chemistry Club. My decision of taking Honors classes opened many doors for me and at the same time made me a better student to compete with others. I believe Honors classes are a challenging and rewarding option to any students.
Currently, I am pursuing my Master’s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science at Long Island University, while working part time at QCC as a Chemistry lecturer. In this capacity I always encourage my students to take Honors classes and explain all their benefits. Actually studying at a four year college or aiming at a high degree profession is very competitive. You need to be prepared for the challenging process of admission and school work. You need to be unique and ready for more challenging. Honors classes are the best option for you.
