STEM student Tao Hong is a recipient of the 2015-16 NYSMATYC Award for Excellence in Mathematics.

NYSMATYC awards are granted to mathematics students in New York State who have been enrolled in a two-year college during the 2015-2016 academic year and who expect to transfer to a bachelor’s degree granting institution during the 2015-16 or 2016-17 academic year to continue their studies in mathematics or a mathematics related field. Applicants must have at least one year of Calculus completed (Calculus I and II), a minimum 3.50 cumulative grade point average (GPA) in completed mathematics courses, and a minimum overall GPA of 3.30. Students interested in mathematics education are especially encouraged to apply.

In the fall 2015 NYSMATYC contest Queensborough came in first place out of the 25 participating colleges.  One of the top scorers was Tao Hong, who came in second place. Tao expressed his thanks to Dr. Paris Svoronos, Professor in the Department of Chemistry, for his “encouragement and for helping me become a different person who has found his path and dream.”

Tao plans to further his studies in material engineering and nanoscience. His dream is to pursue a doctorate and become a material chemist.

Each semester, the Math Team participates in math competitions, including those given by the CUNY Math League, the (NYSMATYC), and the American Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC). Queensborough’s students take the exams on campus in the Science Building.

All QCC students are welcome to join the Math Club and the Math Team, regardless of their area of study.  The club coordinators are Dr. Howard Sporn, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciences, and Dr. Robert Holt, Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciences.
