Language Requirements and Placements
Please note that some programs at Queensborough Community College have a language requirement depending on your high school background and QCC curriculum.
Placement of students is usually automatically done online when students apply to the College. All students in the Liberal Arts and Sciences programs (LA and LS), and Fine and Performing Arts students, must take at least one language course. Depending on your high school background, students in other programs may also be required to take a foreign language.
Placement can also be done in the Department. When you come for placement, you will be instructed to complete a Language Placement Form with information about your curriculum and past experience in foreign language. Then, according to your particular background, curriculum and language requirements, you will be advised by a faculty member as to language courses that are the most appropriate for you.
We urge you very strongly to complete the Language Placement Form with care and accuracy. As an incoming student it is important for you to be fully informed of your foreign language requirements and to be placed in the right courses. Failure to do so might result in a real problem when you want to graduate. Also, if you change your curriculum, please come to the department to have your placement revised.
If you have a language requirement, you may choose to continue a language previously studied (after being placed in the proper courses by a departmental adviser), or start a new language.
If you are a heritage speaker of a language you will not be placed in lower-Ievel language courses. If you were to be enrolled in foreign language classes designed for native speakers of English, you would be overqualified. It will be more beneficial for you to be placed in upper-level courses where you will learn advanced writing skills. This will enhance your bilingual abilities and will be an added asset in the workplace.
