Entering CourseInfo for the first time

CourseInfo is an easy, graphical tool that will make getting around your course as simple as getting around your own neighborhood. Of course, if you're a newbie to the environment, you'll need a few directions to get started.

Step 1 Go to the CourseInfo Global Gateway to enter your course. You will see a list of all courses offered this semester. If you have already registered for a course through your individual college, you have been assigned a User ID and password. If you have not registered for your course, you must first contact the college offering the course and register.

At the CourseInfo Global Gateway, click on the name of your course. Be sure to select the correct section number from Course ID.

Step 2 After clicking on your Course Name, you will be prompted to enter your User Name and Password.

User Name = First initial of first name + First initial of last name + last four digits of the social security number

Password = Date of birth (full four-digit year, two-digit month, two-digit date)

Example:

Name: Steve Cohen

Social security number: 123-45-6789

Born: 2/13/65

User Name = sc6789

Password = 19650213

Step 3   Once you enter your password, you will be taken to the Announcements page.

On the left side of the Web page is a navigation bar that will guide you through your course. Your instructor may not include all of the areas found here:

Announcements

Your professor will post time-sensitive information here, such as upcoming exams.

Course Information

Typically, you'll find your course syllabus, grading policies, and schedules here.

Staff Information

Find general information about your professor here, including office hours, telephone numbers, and E-mail addresses.

Course Documents

Look here for online handouts, lecture materials, and other important documents.

Assignments

Homework assignments, tests, quizzes, and surveys are found here.

Communication

Use this area for online discussions, virtual chats, and E-mail.

External Links

Find links to other sites here.

Student Tools

The student drop box to submit materials to your instructor, a calendar, and your Web page tools are all available here. Click on the Student Manual for online help, including a complete explanation of the CourseInfo environment.

Step 4 The first time you enter your course, you will need to change your E-mail address. To change your E-mail address:

  1. From the Navigation Area, choose Student Tools and click Change Your Information.
  2. Scroll to Account Information and enter your correct E-mail address in the E-mail field.
  3. Scroll past Personal Information and click the Update User Information button.

Step 5 You should now explore the CourseInfo environment. Click on Course Information, Course Documents, and the other areas described above to review the syllabus, assignments, and other information posted by your instructor. If you wish to save documents to your hard drive, go under your browser's file menu and select Save As.

Step 6 Your instructor may ask you to submit documents through the system. Go to the Student Drop Box in Student Tools. Under Add File to DropBox you will notice a Browse button. Click on this button to browse through your hard drive or floppy disk for the file you wish to upload. (PC users will select and open the file. Mac users double-click on files.) Name the file so that your instructor will know the contents of the file, such as Karen's Homework. If you instructor sends you back the file with comments and you wish to save it to your hard drive, right-click on the Link Name and select Save Link As.

Step 7 You can also send E-mail and join Discussions through CourseInfo. Go to the Communications center. Click on Send Email to send a message to individual users, your instructor, or a group. Be sure to enter a subject and message before you send your E-mail.

Click on Discussions to join a topic. Create a new thread, or topic of discussion, by clicking on Start New Thread. Enter a Subject, which is the topic. Enter the text in the Body box. Click Post.

To view all replies to a thread, select Expand All. Select Collapse All to return to the original format.

Step 8 To leave the CourseInfo environment, you must first logout, then close the browser. For security reasons, it is important that you first logout using the Logout button.
