(QCC) Queensborough Community College: The fall semester has just begun. You started your first semester at QCC two years ago. Do you remember what your first days were like?

(MW) It was a challenge to adapt to college life. I was from another country and didn't understand the U.S. educational system. I assumed everyone knew what they were doing except me! Soon enough, I realized that there were many students just like me.

(QCC) What was the turning point?

(MW) When I discovered QCC's student support services. Once I connected with an advisor, I received clear guidance on my academic path, the best class schedule that fit my life schedule, and what various offices and departments would offer me the personal support I needed. I learned that the support is there if you show up for it.

(QCC) And not just outside of class, right?

(MW) Absolutely! I took a speech class during my first semester and sat at the back of the room to avoid attention. But my professor was persistent in reaching out to me, asking whether I had any questions, and encouraged me to join the discussions.  One day my professor said that she looked forward to my speech presentation and asked me about my topic. She encouraged me and pushed me to work hard. My first presentation wasn’t that good, but the second one was better and the third was strong!

(QCC) Was this another turning point?

(MW) For sure! My newfound confidence inspired me to join the finance club and then CSTEP (Collegiate Science Technology Entrance Program) which opened doors to scholarships, internships, and opportunities to participate in events including community service. I also started networking off campus with executives in related fields.  I carried the confidence and knowledge I gained at these events back with me to campus, to class and to different activities. Currently, I am a trainer for Handshake AI, a part-time job I learned about through the Office of Career Services at QCC.

(QCC) On the topic of scholarships, you have big news to share.

(MW) Yes, I was awarded a NYU CCTOP Scholarship which stands for New York University Community College Transfer Program. I was very excited to receive this scholarship which will allow me to complete my bachelor's in science degree at NYU, where I will major in Information Systems and Technology.

(QCC) Congratulations. What career field do you plan to pursue?

(MW) I plan to be a technology, information science, and business management professional, specializing in project management and data analytics.

(QCC) It must be a good feeling to know your career path. Speaking of paths, what put you on the path to run for elected office?

(MW) I caught myself thinking about it a while ago and wondered if I could be someone who represents students. But I decided that it would never happen to me because I'm still somewhat shy. But then I thought maybe I should give it a try. I said to myself outloud, "Let's just give it a try."

(QCC) And now that you are the SGA President, what would you would like students to know as they embark on a new semester?

(MW) First, I want students to know that it is my deep honor to represent and support the student body. My priorities are many, but they will be built around creating welcoming spaces for all students to come together, to share experiences, to build meaningful connections through networking and events, to meet new people and make friends, and to feel valued and celebrated for just being themselves!
