Course-specific student learning outcomes:

1. Convocation, a mandatory class taken in tandem with Individual Study in Music Performance, serves as a live forum through which students will gain valuable experiences by participating as both audience and performer throughout the semester. The Music Department strives to provide a wide variety of experiences relevant to many music genres, with information that will prove valuable to all students regardless of their individual musical interests. Though performances, guest artists, and related events will vary each semester, students enrolled in Convocation will:

  • Participate in formal and informal concerts
  • Interact with peers and professional musicians in master classes on a variety of topics
  • Attend a variety of guest artist events
  • Participate as a member of a community of students with common musical interests and goals
  • Perform works in progress in a supportive environment alongside peers
  • Explore various issues related to music performance

Program-specific outcomes

Prepare students who wish to transfer to a four-year institution of higher learning to pursue a career in music by providing a solid foundation in the areas of musicianship and performance.

Provide the general college students with the opportunities to study music in a variety of classes that promotes intellectual inquiry, global awareness and lifelong active learning.

Student Evaluation Criteria:

Students are evaluated based on their attendance at Convocation events and on their participation in those events as required by their respective ensemble directors and performance instructors.

Class Policies:

Practice: It is expected that students will practice their respective instruments/voice throughout the semester. The minimum daily practice amount, as stated in syllabi for Individual Study of Music Performance, is 1.5 hours per day. Individual practice times may be greater based on the needs for each student. While Convocation encourages the performance of works in progress, students should be as prepared as possible when performing.

Attendance:

Convocation will meet 7 times throughout the semester, and attendance at each session is mandatory.

In accordance with QCC attendance requirements stated in academic standing, absences of 15% or more of the course may result in a failing grade. Excessive late arrivals or early departures may also result in a failing grade. http://www.qcc.cuny.edu/academicAffairs/academic-standing.html
