Steering Committee Report October 2020

We take a breath now for a moment to consider the work each of is doing to serve our students, and to gather at our monthly meeting to consider the work of the college.

Annual Reports have continued to be submitted enumerating the work of Senate Standing Committees. We thank all committee members for their work in support of college operations during this time of virtual reality, and we especially thank committee chairs and secretaries for the considerable undertaking of managing committee tasks.

Steering Committee had begun the process of assisting Standing Committees in assessing their work as part of a three-year cycle of Assessment of Governance, but events precluded us from completing that task for Academic Year 2019-2020. Because current committee membership input is crucial to accurate assessment, we will take up Standing Committee assessment again this year. We regret the delay, but believe accurate assessment is most important.

The Emergency Management Advisory Group was formed several months ago and has met throughout the summer, and continues to meet. EMAG serves as consultant to the President and the Emergency Management Team as they make crucial decisions about a carefully phased campus reopening. Steering Committee represents the Senate at these meetings, and we want to acknowledge the care that SVP Sherri Newcomb has taken to ensure that all campus constituencies are represented at these meetings and that all viewpoints are heard. We want to thank Sherri and all the other committee members who have served the campus faithfully in this process: Joseph Cartolano, Chief Administrative Superintendent, Buildings and Grounds; Edmund Clingan, Professor, PSC/CUNY representative; Stephen Di Dio, CUNY Coronavirus Campus Liaison; Margot Edlin, Professor, Faculty Executive Committee Chair; William Faulkner, CUNY Coronavirus Campus Coordinator; Isabel Hocevar, Director, Health Services; Brian Kerr VP Student Affairs; Asia Khan, SGA President; Liza Larios, Dean of Human Resources, Labor Relations; Timothy Lynch, Provost, representing OAA; Christine Mangino, College President; Anne-Marie Menendez, Professor, representing Chairpersons;. Jo Ann Rollo, CUNY Administrative Assistant, representing staff; Ralph Romanelli, Information Systems Specialist; George Sherman, Executive Director, Information Technology; and John Triolo, Director of Public Safety.

Steering Committee thanks former Interim President Timothy Lynch for his consideration of the amount of work that Senate Committee service entails. Each May, SC presents a request to the President for reassigned time in consideration of committee work. For 2020 – 2021 the request was made on May 15th and was for 24 hours of reassigned time, to be distributed among officers of Steering Committee and chairs of Committee on Committees, Curriculum Committee, and Committee on Course and Standing. The request was granted and a description of duties of each committee officer is attached, to support the request. The number of reassigned time hours is unchanged from 2019-2020.

As always, we are here to listen to any and all concerns and to support the work of the Senate and shared governance at the college.
