Steering Committee Report November 2021

Steering Committee thanks the following Senate Standing Committees for their posting to their webpages of their Annual Reports: Committee on Course and Standing, Arthur Abramov, chair; Committee on Academic Development/Elective Programs, Rezan Akpinar, chair; Committee on Cultural and Archival Resources, Adam Luedtke, former chair.

At this writing we await Annual Reports from Computer Resources, eLearning, and Publications. This is an extraordinarily busy time and we thank again those committees who have submitted their reports.

There was 100% committee representation at Standing Committee Chairs and Secretaries meetings in October. We thank all committee officers for their commitment to effective committee operations.

We are happy to invite to the floor the following Faculty Fellows: For Student Success, Professor Arthur Adair, Associate Professor, Department of Communication, Theatre, and Media Production; For Research Activites, Dr. Sharon Lall-Ramnarine, Professor, Department of Chemistry; and For Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Dr. Kerri-Ann Smith, Associate Professor, Department of English. Each of these colleagues is doing outstanding work in furthering student success in their respective initiatives, and this is a good opportunity to learn about each of their work.

It appears that the voice of shared governance across the University has been heard: the President of the College of Staten Island has announced his resignation, and with that, a recent attempt to dilute faculty and staff voices in shared governance there will be put aside. We announce this with gratitude to Phil Pecorino, Faculty Executive Committee Chair for his efforts in sharing with the Chancellery Faculty Governance Leader concern CUNY-wide over this matter; and to President Mangino and Provost Lynch for their steadfast commitment to shared governance.

On Tuesday, November 23rd, President Mangino will host a State of the College presentation. This will be a good time for our college community to come together to celebrate our successes, face our challenges together, and renew our commitment to each other as colleagues and friends – a fit thing to do as the Holiday Season approaches.
