Steering Committee October 2025

The Steering Committee is pleased to report that we have received more annual reports from Standing Committees. As of the date of this report, there are only 5 committees who have yet to submit annual reports, and the Steering Committee will remain in contact with those committees to receive these important reports to the Academic Senate. Already we have seen a much higher volume of annual report submissions than in previous academic years, and we appreciate Standing Committees’ cooperation in this task. The Steering Committee is now updating our feedback to submitted annual reports, which aids in maintaining ongoing communication with Standing Committees as they continue their work in the 2025-26 academic year.

Vice Chair Daniel Garbin conducted a support session for Standing Committee Chairs and Secretaries on October 8 with a positive turnout, and will have conducted a second session on Wednesday, October 15. We will also hold two such meetings in the Spring 2026 semester, shifting focus to matters concerning Standing Committee elections, officer roles in the spring semester, and content/formatting of annual reports.

The Steering Committee is committed to student involvement in governance, and we have been in contact with Gisela Rivera and SGA in obtaining a roster of student representatives. As the SGA is currently filling officer vacancies, we hope to have a full list of student representatives to welcome to the November Senate. In addition to At-Large membership, students are encouraged to volunteer for assignment to Standing Committees and we will continue to work with SGA and Student Activities to place as many students as possible in those roles.

The Steering Committee will be reaching out to Department Chairs in our search for faculty volunteers to serve as Steering Committee Designees on various Standing Committees. This service role is one that helps the Steering Committee to stay in close contact with committees that may need support in a variety of ways throughout the academic year. We try to give preference to those faculty who are not currently serving as Senators or serve on a Standing Committee. However, anyone who is interested in serving as a Designee should please contact us and we are happy to work with you.

Lastly, an important reminder that the December Senate will be the last opportunity for the Academic Senate to consider curriculum changes for inclusion in the Fall 2026 catalog. Michael Pullin had communicated to Department Chairs this deadline along with Curriculum Committee meeting dates and submission deadlines.
