Monthly Report of the Committee on Committees for November 2025

QUEENSBOROUGH COMMUNITY COLLEGE – THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK
Monthly Report of the Committee on Committees for November 2025

November 7, 2025
From: Ben Murolo, Chairperson of the Committee on Committees
To: Dr. Scott Litroff, Chairperson of the Academic Senate Steering Committee

  1. Nidhi Gadura, Chair of Chairs, brought our proposal (below) for "meeting hours" to be added to the school weekly calendar to the Chairs' meeting on 10/21/25. The Chairs voted unanimously to approve. This will be presented at the November Senate meeting for a vote.
  2. As per the bylaws [thank you Steve Dahlke] we have to vote in alternate Senators appointed this semester:
    1. As was reported last month, Yusuf Danisman, Math, is replacing David Pham as a Senator (FMAL) while Pham is on leave this semester. As Yusuf was the only volunteer, no vote was required.
    2. George Proteasa, Biological Sciences & Geology, has volunteered to replace Laura Sabani on the Senate (2026) during her year-long sabbatical. Nicole McClam (HPED) and Matthew Lau (English) also volunteered. (Jody Resko (Social Sciences) and Wenjian Liu (Math) also volunteered, but those 2 departments already have 4 Senators.) This will require a vote.
  3. There is a need for a temporary replacement for Clarence Jefferson Hall (History) this semester on the CCAR committee.  No action was taken because of how late it is in the semester.
  4. Steve Dahlke submitted a Web Request form so all CoC members have access to Cascade.  Ha also submitted an IT Service Request for all CoC members to have access to the CoC email address.
  5. There was continued discussion regarding lowering the staff of some Senate committees to better reflect their charges.  This is consistent with the lower number of faculty positions and the shortage of alternate replacements.  This will require the CoC to submit a proposal to the Bylaws committee for their approval and then it would go before the Senate. This would formalize the change of numbers.

    Current Committee numbers are:
Steering Committee (3) - no change to be suggested
Committee On Committees (9) - suggest lowering to 6
Academic Development/Elective Academic Programs (9) - suggest lowering to 6
Admissions (6) - no change to be suggested
Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness (9) - suggest lowering to 6
Awards & Scholarships (6) - busy committee; suggest raising to 9
    Budget Advisement (4)
Bylaws (6) - no change to be suggested
Computer Resources (9) - suggest lowering to 6
Continuing Education and Workforce Development (6) - no change to be suggested
Course & Standing (9) - no change to be suggested
Cultural and Archival Resources (9) - suggest lowering to 6
Curriculum (9) - no change to be suggested
    eLearning (9) - suggest lowering to 6
Environment, Quality of Life, and Disability Issues (9) - no change to be suggested
Food Insecurity (9) - no change to be suggested
Library (6) - no change to be suggested
Pre-College (6) - no change to be suggested
Publications (6) - no change to be suggested
Student Activities (6) - no change to be suggested
Vendor Services (6) - no change to be suggested
WID WAC (9) - suggest lowering to 6

  6. Concurrent with changing committee populations, the CoC will undertake the task of polling the community about any new committees that need creation. Rezan offered to add this question to the Academic Development Committee poll going out at the end of the semester regarding faculty evaluations. Kevin will send the text of the question to Rezan.

Respectfully submitted,

S Benjamin Murolo

Chairperson, Committee on Committees

MEMORANDUM

TO: Academic Senate Steering Committee

FROM: Committee on Committees, Sebastian Murolo (Chairperson) & Kevin Kolack (Secretary)

SUBJECT: Proposal regarding establishing Meeting Hours on the weekly Academic Calendar

DATE: Wednesday, October 22nd, 2025

Whereas, the Academic Senate meets on the second Tuesday of every month at 3PM, and

Whereas, the academic department Chairpersons meet on the second Tuesday of every month at 2PM, and

Whereas, other meetings are commonly scheduled on Tuesday afternoons, and

Whereas, there formerly was a block of “time for meetings” on the QCC weekly calendar, and

Whereas, the ability to attain a quorum at Academic Senate Standing Committee meetings often limits the ability of these committees to conduct their business, and

Whereas, the establishment of a posted Standing Committee meeting time has proven difficult for many Committees due to the unpredictability of instructional staff teaching and work commitments, and

Whereas, discussions with the President’s office and the academic department Chairpersons have garnered support for the re-establishment of a block of “time for meetings” on the QCC weekly calendar,

Be it resolved that: weekly “Meeting Hours” be added to the Queensborough Community College weekly academic calendar on Tuesdays between the hours of 3PM and 5PM.

Be it further resolved that department Chairpersons be discouraged from assigning classroom or other activities to instructional staff during those hours so that Senators can attend Senate meetings on the second Tuesday of every month, so that Senate Committee meetings may be held on the third Tuesday of each month, and leaving the other Tuesdays available for Departmental and other meetings.
