Course Description in college catalog:

Intermediate Arabic I continues to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), and to foster acquaintance with colloquial variants of Arabic. New vocabulary, idiomatic phrases and grammatical structures will be introduced within the context of assignments that familiarize students with everyday activities in the Arabic-speaking world. Weekly individual listening, speaking and viewing activities in the language laboratory or online are part of the course.

  • Improved practice in reading and writing Arabic
  • Acquisition of additional vocabulary and recognition of Arabic derivatives and inflections
  • Proficiency in listening to spoken Modern Standard Arabic and Colloquial Arabic
  • Increased fluency in Arabic conversations on simple everyday topics
  • Expanded knowledge of Arabic Grammar

A. Assessment of listening and conversational skills will occur through:

  1. Evaluations of in-class oral activities, such as conversations with instructor, between pairs of students and in groups;
  2. Successful completion of assigned activities based on DVD/Media Materials)
  3. Oral dictation exercises in quizzes and exams

B. Assessment of writing skills, including comprehension of grammar, will be accomplished through individual, pairs, or group exercises in class, homework assignments, successful completion of writing activities assigned by your instructor and through grammar, vocabulary, and composition in quizzes and exams.

C. Assessment of reading skills will be accomplished through participatory exercises in class, homework assignments, successful completion of textbook reading activities assigned by your instructor, and reading materials in quizzes and exams.

  • Throughout the semester, we will develop strategies that will assist you in becoming a good language learner. In general, you should practice the mechanic of grammar and pronunciation at home for homework. As class time is very limited it is imperative that you come prepared. This means:
  • Your homework should be complete and thoughtfully done.
  • You should have some specific questions about things you don’t understand.
  • You should read and underline the explanations given in the textbook. They are in English and should help you understand grammatical concepts.
  • You should come to class ready to speak in Arabic using the skills you practiced at home.
