Common Read Events
February 24th to March 11th

The Common Read is a high-impact practice that sponsors cross-disciplinary events in support of a campus-wide, shared reading of a selected text.  These events provide participating faculty and students additional opportunities  to engage  socially and academically across the campus, while supporting the learning in each individual class.

Gratitude Journaling Event
Wednesday, March 3rd from 12PM to 1PM

Sponsored by the Creative Writing Club and the Mindfulness Club;
Please Contact Alison Cimino: ACimino@qcc.cuny.edu

What is gratitude practice? How do I journal and create a gratitude journal, and why might I want to? These are questions we will explore in this Gratitude Journaling Event. Please join us as we practice different ways of creating gratitude journals and share our thoughts in a friendly space. We will explore some approaches to gratitude practice and read poems that touch on gratitude as well. Please join The Creative Writing Club as we explore this practice and share our thoughts in this community event.

Honoring Haiku
Wednesday, March 10, 2021 from 12PM to 1:30PM

Sponsored by the Creative Writing Club
Please Contact Alison Cimino: ACimino@qcc.cuny.edu

Join the Creative Writing Club for a discussion and creative writing event exploring haiku. Haiku, a 3 line, Japanese form of poetry that relies on a syllable count of 5/7/5 syllables in each line, is a beautiful and historic form—very much alive today. Usually, the focus of a haiku ends with an element of surprise, as in the famously translated poem by Basho:

The old pond

A frog jumped in,

Kerplunk!

We will read examples of haiku and discuss haiku created by poets in Japanese internment camps. In addition, we will write our own haikus! We hope you can join us!

See more translations of the Basho poem.

Let’s Renga! Creating Community Through Poetry
Wednesday, April 14th from 12PM to 2PM

Sponsored by Creative Writing Club and the Transformative Learning in the Humanities (Mellon Foundation) Grant; Please Contact Alison Cimino: ACimino@qcc.cuny.edu

Please join the Creative Writing Club as we celebrate Asian Heritage Month through Japanese poetry. In this interactive event, we will write a renga, collaborative poem. While renga began in the 10th century, it developed further in 15th century Japan, linking three line and two lined stanzas together. Poets linked haiku as an activity at parties. The renga, a Japanese form that relies on haiku and verse about the seasons, encourages community building through attention to the environment and to language. Please join us as we read renga poetry and learn about this iconic form, prior to writing. The simplicity of the format encourages group participation and success while encouraging participants to play with language and explore self-expression.

This interactive forum provides a great opportunity for shared conversations with alumni (who have been in your shoes) and can provide a booster of encouragement during this remote learning semester. The QCC Transfer Resource Center will also be present to assist students and answer questions about moving beyond QCC. All students who attend will be entered in a raffle to get a free face mask!
