This year’s retreat will focus on Student Engagement in the AI Era. As artificial intelligence continues to transform the educational landscape, it offers new opportunities to enhance teaching, learning, and research. At the same time, it raises important questions surrounding ethical implementation, academic integrity, student engagement, and the future of traditional teaching methodologies. This retreat will provide a forum for faculty to explore these opportunities and challenges through presentations, discussions, and collaborative exchange.

Don’t AI Alone: Building a CUNY-Wide, Human-Centered AI Teaching Network
Professor Casandra Silva Sibilin, Lecturer of Philosophy, York College
Casandra Silva Sibilin is a Lecturer in Philosophy at York College, CUNY. She is one of the organizers of “Don’t AI Alone,” a CUNY grassroots community bringing together faculty, staff, and students to discuss the challenges of AI in education. She has written about ChatGPT through the lens of philosophy of education and created open educational resources to empower faculty and students to develop their own AI tools. Beyond CUNY, Silva Sibilin is the founder and leader of the subgroup on Custom Bots/GPTs for “AI in Education,” a global community of educators dedicated to sharing resources related to the impact of AI on teaching and learning.

Measuring Student Attitudes towards AI to inform Practice and Policy
Dr. Karan Puri, Assoc Prof, Math Department, Queensborough Community College
Dr. Karan Puri is an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Queensborough Community College. He has dedicated his career to advancing student success in gateway, developmental, and co-requisite mathematics courses. Over the past two years, he has worked on integrating artificial intelligence into gateway algebra classroom and continues to investigate its impact on the most at-risk students.
