Overview: Biochemists study the chemical processes taking place in living organisms. They research the impact of foods, drugs, hormones, vitamins etc. on vital life processes. They study the development of both normal and abnormal cells. They seek to improve the health and growth of life.
Duties: Biochemists study chemical processes taking place in tissues and organs of living organisms. They determine affects of vitamins, hormones, enzymes, allergens and minerals on body functions.

They examine chemical aspects of body immune systems to investigate causes and possible prevention of disease such as AIDS. Biochemists research ways to prevent the immune system attacking transplanted organs.

They study development of normal and abnormal cells, the mechanisms of breathing, digestion and metabolism. They determine how the body stores fat and the effects of dieting and exercise.

Biochemists investigate chemical changes in the living organism that occur with growth and aging. They determine what kinds of nutrition, exercise and genetic factors influence the aging process.

Education Level: Typically, a Bachelor’s Degree from a 4-year college (some are 5 years) is required to be considered for this occupation.
Additional Training/Education: A bachelor's degree is adequate for some non-research jobs in administration or laboratory testing. A master's degree is most commonly required for jobs in applied research and for management positions, as well as teaching in a two-year college. Those who have a graduate degree are expected to enjoy better opportunities than those who have a bachelor's degree. A Ph.D. is usually required for university teaching.
Advancement Info: In government or industry, beginning biochemists with a bachelor's degree usually work in quality control or testing. In addition, they assist senior biochemists in research labs. With additional education, biochemists may advance to more demanding positions. Advancement is more likely for biochemists who have advanced degrees. Biochemists with a Ph.D. and experience can lead basic research. Also, a Ph.D. is often required for advancement to management positions.
