The Center for XML and Web Services Technologies has been established to address the need for an educational and advisory resource where IT professionals can avail themselves of comprehensive expertise in the conceptual underpinnings and practical implementation of these technologies. The Center was created by a consortium of XML subject matter experts and it has permanent facilities at Queensborough Community College of City University of New York.

The Center is seeking two part time assistants (approximately 20 hours/week) to participate in research, development and documentation projects related to the objectives of the Center.

The successful applicant will be involved in all aspects of the Center’s operations. Projects will include printing, reviewing and summarizing product and technology documentation, installation and testing of a variety of XML-related technology product and implementation scenarios, maintenance and updating of computer laboratory equipment, and participation in delivery of technology demonstrations to small and large audiences.

Successful applicants will receive a variety of benefits including administrative access to lab facilities, working participation with projects utilizing cutting edge, real-world, commercial computing products and environments, and membership on an elite team of proven technology and XML professionals.

The position requires a commitment of 18 months to the program, and pays $20 an hour.

Applicant requirements include:

  • A passion for advanced, standards based computing, and a general understanding of why it is important to computing in general.
  • A working knowledge of XML (what it is, what it’s used for, how it’s structured).
  • General familiarity and some working experience with an object oriented programming environment (Java, C++, C#, VB.Net, etc.).
  • Proficiency with HTML markup.
  • Basic web development experience (ASP, ASP.Net, JSP). This requires knowledge of the actual technology, not just a tool to generate the code.
  • Self-motivated interest in pursuing information related to these technologies.
  • The ability to be on site at Queens Community College at least twice a week during days and evenings (work will be a combination of telecommuting and on-site).
  • Ownership of at least one personal computer capable of running a variety of internet-based technology products. The lab will provide on-site facilities, but telecommuting/remote work will require the applicant to have their own equipment, preferably with a cable or DSL connection.

This is an exciting opportunity to get practical experience with a high-powered team of professionals that have worked for a variety of leading technical companies and standards organizations. A serious passion for enterprise web-based computing is a must!
