January 27, 2012
Everyone,
A CUNY wide policy prohibiting the use of tobacco products on all 24 CUNY campuses, including Queensborough Community College, will go into effect on August 27, 2012. The CUNY Policy prohibits smoking and the use of tobacco products anywhere on or within the grounds and facilities of a campus.
Our awareness and education campaign, which will officially commence on January 27, is designed to notify members of the College community about the policy which will apply to faculty, staff and students, as well as to prospective students, members of our external community, friends, and visitors who attend campus events. The awareness campaign will continue through August 27, 2012 when the Queensborough campus will go entirely tobacco-free.
The awareness campaign will include tobacco-free messaging on our website www.qcc.cuny.edu, on digital signage, and on College materials, both paper and electronic The tobacco-free messaging is also being added to all publications currently in production, such as the student and faculty handbooks, brochures for internal and external audiences (KHRCA, QCC Art Gallery, QPAC and Continuing Education), Open House materials, flyers, posters and banners.
The messaging will go on the CUNYfirst homepage, and it will be added to all routine student communications and billing. Taking advantage of existing communications will minimize additional expenses associated with printing and postage costs.
I encourage you to add the messaging, as I have done, to the bottom of all your emails as part of the automatic signature. Our Academic Computing Center has posted instructions on our website www.qcc.cuny.edu/tobacco-free for those who would like to do so and need assistance.
The awareness and education campaign will also include information about support services available to people who want to quit smoking and/or the use of tobacco products and go tobacco-free by August 27th. The Office of Health Services will provide information and counseling as well as free nicotine patches and gum to those who request assistance. Anti-smoking kits are available and can be delivered directly to your home address.
I thank you in advance for your cooperation with the implementation and compliance with CUNY’s Tobacco Policy at QCC. Queensborough faculty, staff and students have a long tradition of respect for one another despite differences of opinion; I have no doubt that our community spirit will support responsible behavior and compliance with this health initiative.
