Dr. Botman uses the insights she has gained from her research into Egyptian 20th-century history and its evolving notions of citizenship to set her discussion of 20th-century America's conception of citizenship and the growing opportunities for higher education. At the same time that Egypt was throwing off its colonial burden, its leaders applied citizenship selectively and offered education, employment, and power to a narrow sector of the population.
