The 49th Annual CUNYAC Community College Women's Basketball Championship kicked off today with a matchup between the #1 seeded Queensborough Tigers and the Bronx Broncos.

Earlier this month, the Tigers and Broncos faced off in Bayside. Queensborough came out on top with a 69-44 win.

The Tigers were off to a quick lead, scoring 5 points in the first minute of play- with a layup and three-pointer by sophomore Shantana Kanhoye. The Broncos also got on the board quickly and after five minutes of action, Queensborough led the competition 13-6.

Midway through the first half, Queensborough forward Ludeysi Gonzalez netted a jumper to help Queensborough to a 9 point lead (21-12).

For the Broncos, CUNYAC Player of the Year Hivelize Escobar scored 12 of her teams 15 total points of the half. As a team, they pulled down 20 rebounds and complied 5 steals.

At the half, the Tigers had a 29 point advantage over the Broncos (44-15). Kanhoye had a team-high 18 points and sophomore Gessell Prentice followed closely behind with 17 total points at the end of the first half.

After 5 minutes of second half action, the Tigers compiled 51 total points and 41 total rebounds. Prentice and Kanhoye combined for a total of 30 points and 14 rebounds.

Bronx could not seem to overcome dominant Queensborough basketball. Compiling 89 points, 61 rebounds and 10 steals, the Queensborough Tigers were crowned the 2014 Community College CUNYAC Women's Basketball Champions- overtallying Bronx by 50 points (89-39).

"It was a great team win," said Queensborough head coach David Chambers. "It's a great feeling bringing the championship back home."

Kanhoye netted a total of 29 points, pulled down 18 rebounds and racked-up 8 assists with 5 steals. For her efforts, she was named the CUNYAC/Con Edison Tournament MVP. The sophomore guard's performance earned her a number two slot on the CUNYAC Community College Women's Single Game Tournament Record for Points and tied for third for Rebounds.

"We had more teamwork and trust this year," said Kanhoye. "It just took teamwork and trust."
