The Honorable Jenny Rivera, Associate Judge, NY Court of Appeals, will address students, faculty, staff, and members of the greater community on her professional career in public service and share inspirational advice and encouragement to our students. She will also encourage students to participate in the 2015 David A. Garfinkel Essay Contest, open to all CUNY and SUNY students registered for the Spring 2015 semester and eligible for monetary awards. Please encourage your students to come to this lecture.

Judge Rivera was confirmed by the NYS Senate in February 2013. She has clerked for the Hon. Sonia Sotomayor in the Southern District of New York, and also clerked in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals Pro Se Law Clerk’s office. She worked for the Legal Aid Society’s Homeless Family Rights Project, the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund and was appointed by the NYS Attorney General as Special Deputy General for Civil Rights. Judge Rivera has been an Administrative Law Judge for the NYS Division for Human Rights and served on the NYC Commission on Human Rights. Prior to her appointment as Associate Judge, Judge Rivera was a tenured faculty member of the City University of New York School of Law, where she founded and served as Director of the Law School’s Center on Latino/Latina Rights and Equality. She graduated from Princeton University, received her JD and LLM from New York University School of Law and Columbia University School of Law, respectively. She is the second Hispanic woman to serve on New York’s highest court.
