On January 24, the Kupferberg Holocaust Resource Center and Archives held the first completion ceremony for its new Asian Internship program.
The program, co-sponsored by Korean American Civic Empowerment (KACE), features intern interviews with Korean "comfort women" - Asian women who were teenagers during World War II and suffered trauma during the occupation of their country. During the fall 2012 semester, Queensborough students interviewed former comfort women in the New York area and even connected with women in South Korea, who shared their stories via the internet.
Historians believe as many as 200,000 girls and young women were kidnapped or lured from Korea, China, and other occupied lands to serve as sex slaves for the Japanese Army during World War II.
The Asian Internship program, intended to shine a light on the comfort women issue, has attracted global attention.
