The Lady Tigers defeated the #1 team in the Region, Nassau Community College in an amazing five set match. The team lost the first two sets, but came out motivated in the third set to win with an impressive score of 25-10. The success carried over to the fourth set, where the Lady Tigers won 25-17, and then won the final and deciding set 15-11.
The team’s impressive victory was due to the play of Samantha Leoutsakos who led the team with 14 kills, 7 aces, and 15 digs. Her well placed hits and key digs helped rallied the team from being down two sets. However, Samantha did not do it alone. Setter Kristen Brosnan played one of her best games of the season, running a very efficient offense and finished with 32 assists. Freshmen Sabrina Rodriguez also had a very impressive game, finishing with 10 kills and 3 aces. Najada Xhemo who recorded 10 digs and Tatiana Moore who recorded 7 digs while making many great diving plays led the defense. While middle hitter Charlayne Hurlington led the team in blocks with three.
The impressive win takes the Lady Tiger’s to a 14-4 record, already matching last years win total with four regular season games left. The team will look to stay undefeated for the season at home when the Lady Tigers play Union County Community College on 10/19, which will also be senior day. Four seniors will be honored, outside hitter Samantha Leoutsakos, setter Kristen Brosnan, libero Najada Xhemo, and middle hitter Sandy Requeno.
After the regular season concludes, the team will be focused to attempt to repeat as CUNYAC champions. The CUNY Athletic Conference Championship will be held on 10/24 at Kingsborough Community College at 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm.
