Courses in Sociology

  • SS-310 Sociology - Introductory analysis and description of structure and dynamics of human society; special emphasis on application of scientific methods of observation and analysis of social groups, intergroup relations, social change, social stratification, and social institutions.
  • SS-315 Introduction to Criminal Justice - A survey of the institutions and processes of the criminal justice system. Special emphasis on police, courts, and corrections.
  • SS-330 Sociology of the Family - The family as a social institution: its origins, structure, and process; social relationships and interaction patterns involved in dating, mate selection, marriage, parenthoods; nature of family organization and disorganization; current trends in family structure.
  • SS-340 Racial and Ethnic Relations - A study of racial and ethnic groups with emphasis on American society. Focuses on (a) nature of racial and ethnic differentiation; (b) assimilation, pluralism, and stratification as outcomes of intergroup contact; (c) the status of racial and ethnic groups in the economy, and the related issue of socioeconomic mobility; (d) the role of racial and ethnic groups in the political system.
  • SS-350 Sociology of Gender - The feminine and masculine roles in contemporary society; historical, biological, and psychological traditions; sex-role differentiation in the process of socialization. Emphasis placed on the status of women in industrial society in terms of stratification, law, politics, education, the labor force, and race; contemporary social movements.
  • SS-360 Sociology of Education - An analysis of education as an institution and the school as a social system; the community, professional, and organizational roles of the teacher discussed. Relationship of the educational system to the family, economy, politics, and social classes; impact of urbanization, industrialization, and bureaucratization on education. The effects of racial and ethnic compositions of both the community and the student population on the school; special attention to problems of education and the school in the urban community.
  • SS-370 Social Problems and Deviance - An exploration of the relation between deviant behavior, social problems, and the structure of society. Typical forms of deviance examined, including crime, sexual perversion, neurosis, madness, addiction, suicide, and prejudice; deviant behavior and social factors such as race, class, and education; the functions and consequences of deviance for society; and the various agencies of social control.
  • SS-375 Media and Society - An examination of how mass media both create and reflect public opinion and behavior. Topics include the functions and consequences of television and film violence; the effects of social class background on the formation of taste; the impact of the media on political decision-making; the effects of advertising and the rise of consumer culture; and the influence of television viewing on the educational process.
  • SS-385 Introduction to Social Work - This course introduces students to the field of social work. The emphasis is on fundamental principles and values in a historical perspective. Students will gain an appreciation of social work services and the basic competencies needed to pursue a career in social work.
