Associates in Arts Degree (A.A.)
Dual/Joint Program in Early Childhood/Elementary Education (LE-1)

Undergraduate Liberal Arts & Science Requirements for NYS Initial Certificate in Childhood Education

The Dual/Joint Program is designed to assure timely completion of degree requirements.  Students will earn the Associates of Arts in Liberal Arts from Queensborough and then proceed to Queens College where they will complete the degree requirements for the Bachelor of Arts with Elementary Education Certification and an academic major.

Important points to remember:

  • QCC students must maintain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 to graduate with a Liberal Arts Degree in the Dual/Joint Program.

  • Students must have a grade of “B” in EN 101 and a grade of “B” EN 102.  Students with less than a ”B” in each course must complete with a minimum grade of ”B”, either EN 213 or a Writing Intensive course to meet an Early Childhood Education requirement at Queens College.

  • You must have a grade of “B” in at least one (1) course in each of the NYS Learning Standards/Core areas: Math, Science, Social Studies and English Language Arts.

  • If you are placed in MA 120 a pre-requisite for MA 303, the credits will not count for graduation.

  • Foreign Language is not a requirement for graduation at Queensborough Community College.  Queens College students are required to have three years of High School foreign language or three semesters of the same foreign language in College, however for CUNY community college graduates the third semester is waived.  You must complete the language requirement before being accepted into the Elementary Education program at Queens College.

  • The State requires that all elementary education teachers have a liberal  arts major concentration in addition to Education. Therefore, you must have two majors. The second major can be selected from any Liberal Arts & Sciences area such as Mathematics, English, Science, Sociology, etceteras. The only fields that are not acceptable for a second major are Accounting and Physical Education.

  • The three credit elective must be selected from the QCC/QC Course Equivalency List and be a course of major concentration. The courses listed on page two are indicative of possible co-major choices.**

  • Students who enroll in degree programs at QCC as of Fall 2005 as first time freshmen and all transfer students beginning in the Fall of 2005 will be required to successfully complete two (2) credit bearing Writing Intensive (WI) courses in order to receive the associate degree.

  • All students will be are required to pass the CUNY Proficiency Examination (CPE) to:

    • Graduate from associate degree programs.

    • Transfer into the upper division of a senior college.

    • Advance from the lower division to the upper division of a senior college.

  • You are eligible to take the CPE exam once you have attained 45 credits or more. It is advised that you go to the Testing Office (L-408) and/or the Campus Writing Center; located in the Library on the first floor for a copy of the exam.  Test Prep workshops are also available in the Campus Writing Center.
