What happens once I am at Queens College?
All students who graduate from QCC in the Dual/Joint Program would have completed the Liberal Arts and Sciences Requirements for Queens College.
*If you entered Queensborough before fall 2000 completion of your associate’s degree will fulfill the Queens College LASAR requirements. You will not be required to complete the additional liberal arts and science courses outlined by the Elementary Education Department. However you must have MA 303 with a grade no lower than a "C", MU 261, and a Writing Intensive course that can only be taken at Queens College. These courses are equivalent to MA 119 and MU 261 at Queens College. These courses are also pre-requisite courses for the Education major.
*If you entered Queensborough after fall 2000 (this includes fall 2000 semester) you are required to fulfill the Queens College LASAR requirements as well as the additional liberal arts and science courses required by the Education Department. If you followed the new program at Queensborough all LASAR’s including the additional ones will be fulfilled.
Students seeking teacher certification are required to take and pass the New York State Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST). You may take this exam at any time, however it is advised that you take the exam right after you have completed all of your liberal arts and sciences requirements. The continuing education department at Queens College offers test preparation courses.
Declaring a Major and Co-major
If you are interested in teaching at the elementary school level, the state requires that you must have two majors: one in elementary education and another in an academic subject area (Accounting and Physical Education are not acceptable). The following is a list of majors the Elementary Education Department has identified as appropriate co-majors.
CONTENT CORE The Department identified the Queens College majors that best prepare elementary and early childhood teachers to teach one or more of the New York State Learning Standards. The following is a list of those majors and the number of credits that each major requires. Major and number of credits needed to complete major |
