“Today more then ever, all the forces within society must join together to prepare our children to meet the challenges of our rapidly changing world.” –Dr. James P. Comer
The certificate program for Day Care Assistant, under the supervision of the Department of Social Sciences, is designed to prepare students to meet the requirements for employment as a teacher assistant in a range of early childhood settings.
The only accredited certificate program of its kind within CUNY, the program is intended not only for those who presently work in a center-based day care program with infants and toddlers (to three years old) or preschool children (three to five years old), but also for those inexperienced in the field who wish to pursue a career.
The program consists of coursework that provides knowledge of curriculum and teaching; developmental health, nutrition and first-aid needs of infants and toddlers; and extensive field experiences to ensure that students are qualified to work with teachers and other staff in the day care environment. Program participants are provided with continuous advisement and counseling to support educational and professional goals.
Interested students should consult the Department of Social Sciences in the Medical Arts Building, Room M-104, or call 718-631-6251 or Dr. Patricia Spradley at 718-631-6026.
