Name of Fund: Choong - Schick Hong Memorial Scholarship Fund

Date Established: 1993

Purpose: To honor the memory of Dr. Choong-Shick Hong

Guidelines for scholarship:

  • The interest which accrues in the account for this scholarship fund is to be awarded each year provided that there are eligible candidates.
  • If there are no eligible candidates or only one eligible candidate then the unused portion of the interest money is to be returned to the fund and added to the amount to be awarded in the next year. This process would be repeated in following years in which there is fewer than two awards made.
  • The amount to be awarded is to be divided into two amounts as follows: half for a student enrolled in a Day program and half for a student enrolled in an Evening program

Eligibility criteria:

  • Matriculated in an A.A. or A.S. program
  • Completed 24 credits
  • Completed 6 credits in courses offered by the Social Science Department
  • Minimum GPA in courses applied to satisfy the degree requirements of 3.7
  • Returning to QCC in the Fall semester to complete at least two more semester of studies including one more course offered by the Social Science Department

Procedure for determining recipients:

  • Notification letters are to be sent to as many as five students in each division who meet the eligibility requirements indicating whether such candidates are registered in a daytime or evening division 
  • The letters will state the terms for the award and invite eligible students to apply for the awards by returning the invitations indicating their intention to return to QCC and comply with the requirements for the award. Those candidates who accept all the conditions become nominees.
  • If there is only one nominee in either or both categories then that nominee would receive the award after an interview to determine that all criteria have been meet and all terms are accepted by the nominee.
  • If more than one candidate in each division returns the application accepting their nomination for the award then the following criteria are to be used in determining the recipient of the awards in descending order until there is only one remaining nominee in each category:

At the time of the announcement:

  • The highest number of credits in courses offered by the Social Science Department
  • The nominee with the highest overall GPA
  • The highest GPA in courses offered by the Social Science Department
  • The highest number of credits earned on the date the award is announced

Each candidate must:

  • Certify that they are planning to return for two more semesters
  • Submit an essay describing their educational history and future academic and vocational plans (3-10pp.),
  • Undergo an interview with members of the Scholarship Committee of the Department-DCSF in order to ascertain that they have met all the criteria stated above. 

The awards will be made to those who satisfy all requirements and have the highest overall GPA.

  • In the Spring, at the time of the announcement of the award the recipients will be given a letter stating the award and a description of the history and purpose of the award.
  • The actual awarding of the funds will take place in the Fall after the award recipient has registered for classes at QCC.
  • The guidelines, eligibility rules, and procedures are to be reviewed every two years by the Committee on Scholarships-DCSF and revised, if necessary. If revisions are made, a report is to be made to the Department of such changes.
