Group Work   Collaborative Learning

The class will be divided into three Groups. They will be named A B and C.

SPECIAL MESSAGE:

Now before thinking that this is too much work or getting upset about all there is to do in this class or in the first week of the class just   RELAX!  RELAX!    RELAX!

It will take a few weeks to get this Group Organization and activities working and when it does your group work each week will take less than one hour.  We will ease into this and the instructor will be lenient in expecting little in the first three weeks.  No points or grades will suffer in the first three modules.  Not to worry!  Now to the details of how this works.  Wait .  Let me first explain why this is part of the class.

1. Collaborative learning-Many people like to work with others on common projects and get a lot out of doing so.- Not everyone, but many.

2. We often need to work with others and it does not hurt to practice doing this in the virtual world.

3. I want the class to have the opportunity to contribute to the resources available on the world wide web.  The results of the group will work may be posted on the WebPages of this site and made available to the world.  Those who work on it will be credited.  It is because there is so much available on the web that there is a free online textbook for this class.

Details for GROUP WORK

Each module or learning unit of the class each group will receive an assignment to complete-see table below.  There are three types of Group Work  assignments:

There is a description below of what is expected from the group for each type of assignment.

  1. Case Study

  2. Definitions, Terms, Glossary

  3. Resource Listings

Each student will receive either 0 or 1 point for work on the Group Work each module

There are thirteen modules and so Group Work is worth 13 points or 13% of the final grade!

HOW GRADED?

The grades each student receives will be determined by the students in the group and by the instructor.

At the end of each module all members of each group will post the grades for their fellow group members.

  • Members who should receive the 1 point for participation.

  • Members who should not receive the one point for participation.

The instructor will review the grades given out by the students to their fellow group members and the work and determine who contributed to it and how much was contributed (there is a wiki record) and then determine the awarding of the group work points for that week.

How to learn what group you are in?  Easy.  You will read your name right here once the class gets started. GROUPS are fixed for the entire semester.  If there are problems thee may need to be adjustments.

Where to discuss the work?

Each group will have its own WORKPLACE wiki area and location for sharing discussions.  It is in the Learning Unit for the module.  Look for the buttons for GROUPS and then the button for  A or B or C.  During the ORIENTATION and TRAINING period Learn what GROUP you are in by clicking on the GROUP button in the class website or the BlackBoard site and Enter the GROUP Area in BlackBoard and begin discussions and select a group leader. Or, look above this part of this webpage for your group.  Share what you are good at doing and your ideas about the three types of group work you will be doing and how you might contribute.  The group leader should emerge out of those initial discussions in the group discussion forum.

What if you have a question about the assignment?

Ask it in the Ask the Professor Discussion Forum found in the Learning Unit and in the Discussion Board.

How to Submit work?  At the end of the module the Group Leader will put the final collected work into the APPROPRIATE Class WIKIi found off the buttons on the left of the BlackBoard Site.

Case Study

What is it? At the end of each module a student GROUP  must submit a case presentation on some incident or situation which relates to the topic and issues of that module. Such presentations consist of the following two(2) sections.

a. Materials MINIMUM of four (4) items concerning the case located on the internet

i. Newspaper articles

ii. Magazine articles

iii. Professional Journal articles , e.g., Philosophy, Law, Engineering, Computing, Internet etc....

iv. Other Internet items

b. Viewpoints MINIMUM of four (4) items on the case by analysts, ethicists, commentators which MUST include commentary and/or analysis by people who use ethical principles. These would NOT be articles in newspapers or magazines but items found in professional journals or at the websites of academic and professional organizations.  These are articles that make mention of ethical principles and human values.

How to go about it ?

You work in both the class GROUP area and discussion board for you and also in the group wiki where the final work is placed before going into the class wiki.  Go to GROUPS in the BlackBoard site-button on left OR in the LEARNING UNIT you will find a link to your GROUP AREAs

This is basically an assignment where you will use a number of search engines to gather materials from the internet.  GOOGLE, Northernlights, DogPile, Yahoo, etc...

You will copy and paste the addresses (url's) of those materials into a single file or document and submit it to the GROUP wiki. You do NOT need to and should not make any personal comments on the case . So, you are NOT required to do any original thinking or critical thinking on the case. You will be gathering the materials and hopefully reading them and in so doing you will learn more about the issues involved and in gathering materials that involve ethical analysis you will learn more about that as well. The group will decide what to put in and what order to give the items.
