COURSE DESCRIPTION: A study of the changes in behavior and mental processes across the life-span and the biological, psychological, social and cultural factors influencing those changes.

TEXTBOOK: Life-Span Human Development, 5th ed. C.K. Sigelman & E.A. Rider,

Thomson/Wadsworth, 2006.

GRADING: Your final grade will be based on the following components.

4 examinations @ 20% each ………… 80% of final grade

4 journal entries @ 5% each ………… 20% of final grade

Class attendance and participation will also be considered.

NOTE: No extra credit assignments will be given.

ATTENDANCE: Your attendance is expected and required. According to college policy excessive absence (15% or more of class time) is grounds for a grade penalty.

In this class 3 or more unexcused absences is considered excessive.

Developmental Journal Entries

For each of the 4 parts of the syllabus you will write a developmental journal entry based on your observations of a person of your choice. Your entry will relate your observations of the person to one or more topics relevant to the material covered in the part of the syllabus.

The structure of each entry will be as follows:

  • clear description of the observed person’s behaviors, traits, and or condition
  • discussion relating your observations to specific topics in developmental psychology

Instructions:

The journal entries must be 2 pages typed in 12-point font, double-spaced with 1 inch margins.

You may use the same person or different persons for each journal entry.

Keep the identity of the observed person anonymous.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICY

The Department of Social Sciences Academic Integrity Policy adheres to the standards described in the Academic Integrity Policy of Queensborough Community College. Within the framework of the college policy sanctions for violations of academic integrity are left to the discretion of the instructor. Students may appeal sanctions to the department chair who will refer the appeal to a departmental Committee on Academic Integrity for review.

In this class the following policy will be followed:

  • 1st Violation results in F for the assignment.
  • 2nd Violation results in F for the course and in disciplinary action.

Cheating and plagiarism are the most common violations of the academic integrity policy.
