Self-Study Timeline

Queensborough Community College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and undergoes every ten years a comprehensive self-study conducted by the institution itself, followed by a site visit and report by representatives of the Middle States Commission.

This website provides an overview of the process toward reaccreditation, the faculty and staff who are involved in the project, and the timeline leading to final reaccreditation.

The Middle States Commission on Higher Education is an accrediting body comprising faculty peers from the region. Middle States has 14 standards of excellence by which it evaluates an institution, with particular emphasis on outcomes assessment and continuous improvement plans. Queensborough Commmunity College, which is currently accredited by Middle States, is reaccredited every ten years by the commission. During the process of reaccreditation, which takes place over three years, the college produces a comprehensive self-study of the institution; this, coupled with the site visit by a Middle States team of faculty peers, will form the basis for the decision to reaccredit the institution.

Accreditation indicates that an institution is healthy, rigorous in its academic programs, and responsive to its constituents and has a well credentialed faculty, good academic support services, and a comprehensive and clear continuous improvement plan. Losing one’s accreditation would mean complete loss of federal funding and difficult, if not impossible, transfer of credit for students. The process leading to reaccreditation, a challenging one for the entire campus, is also an opportunity for substantive reflection on the structures and processes by which we operate and for serious and committed consideration of recommendations for the future. In short, the process should be meaningful to the institution and provide a vision for future growth.

The Middle States evaluation team has submitted its team report to the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Queensborough’s institutional response to the report was submitted on April 22, 2009. The college now awaits the final commission decision, scheduled for the month of June.
