QCC students and faculty who are involved in a research project on campus are required to (1) complete the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) CITI online training and (2) participate in an in-person RCR workshop within six weeks of starting the project. ALL students, faculty and staff involved in a research project are required to complete the RCR workshop.

 UR Project Title: Technical Theatre as Research 

Professor Kilom will present about student-led research projects in technical theatre which prepare students for employment in the industry. He will describe his research in the classroom approach to an introductory course in Stagecraft. He will also share how UR-HIP offers opportunities for one-to-one mentorship in advanced technical theatre, including design & construction and stage management.

UR Project Title: Developing Methods for Field Microscopy and Analysis Using Portable Microscopes 

Remote learning necessitated the implementation of research projects and hands-on activities that could be performed by students off-campus or in the field without face-to-face supervision. In this project, students in General Biology II courses developed peer-facing protocols to use portable, low-cost microscopes to locate, investigate, and classify biological specimens in their communities.

Past Events: Spring 2020 Brown-bag Discussion

This semester the Undergraduate Research team is beginning a series of informal, brown-bag style lunchtime discussions. These discussions will bring faculty from various disciplines together to talk about their UR experiences, share ideas and form collaborations. We are planning to have 3 presenters at each session. Each presentation will be 15 minutes with a 5-minute question and answer period. There will be time at the end for open discussion.

Light refreshments will be served. The dates for the Spring 2020 semester are as follows:

The HIP Undergraduate Research Coordinator, Dr. Joan Petersen (Associate Professor of Biological Sciences and Geology), hosted the second UR Brown-Bag Lunch discussions. Three professors presented their UR practices in the classroom. Dr. Marie Chantale Damas, Assistant Professor of Physics, presented "engaging Community College Students to in Space Weather Research and Education." Professor Heather Huggins, Assistant Professor of Speech Communication and Theatre Arts, presented "Practice-Based Research Community" with her students. Dr. Scott Litroff, presented his ideas to conduct classroom-based undergraduate research in the music discipline.

This workshop, hosted by Professor Emeritus Thomas C. Reeves, The University of Georgia, touches on the question “Why is evaluation so important?” Higher education faculty across all disciplines are under pressure to seek funding for the development of teaching and learning innovations that will improve the learning of their students. Funding sources demand a robust evaluation plan to be part of any proposal, and if an instructional innovation proposal is funded, they expect the outcomes of the project to be rigorously evaluated. This workshop is specifically designed to establish evaluation as a key strategy throughout the design, development, and implementation of educational innovations in higher education.

The 2019 CUNY Community College Faculty Development Workshop will be held at John Jay College on Thursday, January 10, 2019.

The annual faculty development workshop will feature a keynote presentation by Dr. Thomas Brock, Director of the Community College Research Center.  There will be breakout sessions on the scholarship of teaching and learning, growth mindset in STEM and integrating research into the curriculum across disciplines. There will also be a discussion of open education resources at CUNY.

The workshop will also feature a poster session and you are welcome to present your work. Let us know when you register for the event.
