Living in a rural farming community in Pennsylvania in the early 1900s, precocious and curious Katy Thatcher dreams of following in the foot steps of her father, the town’s beloved physician and becoming a doctor.  One of Katy’s neighbors is a young boy named Jacob, who has autism. Even though he cannot speak, Katy befriends Jacob. They spend time together quietly singing to the horses. She knows there is meaning in the unintelligible sounds he makes and purpose behind his awkward movements. Katy’s quiet understanding and patience allows her to appreciate Jacob’s gifts within his silent world.  When events take an unexpected and tragic turn and Jacob is suspected to be the cause, it is Katy alone who is determined to unravel the convoluted mystery of what happened, and why.  Based upon the critically-acclaimed book by two-time Newbery award-winning writer Lois Lowry.  Drama, 55 minutes, grades 4-8.
