An Undergraduate Faculty Enhanced Workshop funded by The National Science Foundation

The Department of Physics and the Laser and Fiber Optics Technology Program at Queensborough Community College/CUNY and the National Science Foundation are offering, two NSF Faculty Enhancement Workshops in July, 2006. The workshops are designed to enhance instruction in science, engineering, and technology through the use of remote controlled laboratories and interactive multimedia courseware.

The workshops are based upon successful practices and outcomes of an NSF funded project in the Department of Physics: Distance Learning and Virtual Laboratories for Technician Training

Learn How To:

• Design and Develop computer-controlled laboratory exercises for remote access.
• Create interactive laboratory manuals.
• Develop complete laboratory courses for distance learning.
• Learn how to use LabVIEW^TM instrument control and data-acquisition tools.
• How to incorporate computer-controlled laboratory exercises into your courses and curriculum.

Who Should Attend?

• All faculty who teach science, engineering or technology courses and wish to try alternative instructional approaches using distance learning, or
• want to develop distance learning for laboratory courses, or
• want to include computer controlled laboratory exercises in their laboratory courses, or
• wish to adapt or develop science, engineering or technology programs deliverable by distance learning, or
• wish to increase access to courses and programs through distance learning.

Selection Criteria: The workshops are offered to help faculty design and implement projects to further instructional strategies using distance learning and remote controlled laboratories. Faculty participants will be selected to achieve a broad representation of diverse backgrounds, subject areas, and academic institutions.

Workshop Location: The workshops are held at Queensborough Community College in the Department of Physics. The college is located in Bayside, New York in the Borough of Queens. NYC is only 20 minutes from Bayside by commuter train.

Workshop Facilities: The workshops are held in our networked computer facility consisting of multimedia pentium computers and our Laser and Fiberoptics laboratory. Each participant has a computer. There are also computer stations dedicated to remote controlled laboratories.

Hotel Accommodations: NSF funding provides hotel accommodations free of charge, for five nights (Sun.-Fri.) Any additional nights are paid by the participants. The hotel is a ten minute walk from the workshops.

Stipends: NSF funding provides for a $200 stipend for each participant who completes the workshop.

Transportation: Some funding for transportation is available.
