Media Innovator Appointed

The Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard has selected Dr. Elizabeth Toohey, assistant professor of English at Queensborough Community College, City University of New York, as a 2020 Knight Visiting Nieman Fellow.

One of only eight media innovators appointed, Dr. Toohey will develop an immersive journalism curriculum model for community colleges. Her work is part of a larger project to explore and advocate​ for redesigning college composition courses by basing them in media literacy.

Dr. Toohey (pictured) teaches journalism and advises the Queensborough student newspaper, Communiqué. A regular contributor to The Christian Science Monitor, she reviews novels, and nonfiction in women's studies, film and American culture. Her current research focuses on the aftermath of 9/11 in U.S and western European film and fiction.

The Nieman Foundation has awarded 42 visiting fellowships since 2012. Its short-term research opportunities support journalists and other professionals whose work relates to journalism to​ enhance quality, build new business models and design programs to advance journalism.

Dr. Toohey will draw on the extensive resources of Harvard, including local scholars, research centers and libraries, to support her research.
