One, Two, Three, Four! Don’t Miss Kwanzaa Celebration, a Presentation of Queensborough’s Dance Program, to be Held on December 9 at QPAC

Published: December 04, 2018

Some seventy dancers will gather to perform the rhythm, style, drama and thrill of African dance in Kwanzaa Celebration, on Sunday, December 9, at the Queensborough Performing Arts Center (QPAC) at 5:00 p.m.

The show will feature students from Queensborough Community College’s dance program, along with guest artists from Bautinga Arts, Kofago Dance Ensemble, Gloria Eve School of the Arts, and Nu Gamma Psi Step Squad.

The celebration is directed and choreographed by Kevin McEwen, who teaches West African and Afro-Caribbean dance, and dance video choreography at Queensborough.

“Kwanzaa represents family, community and culture,” said Professor McEwen, who is also the Founder and Artistic Director of Kofago Dance Ensemble, and teaches traditional African dance at Gloria Eve School of the Arts. “I want my students to “embrace who they are, and then apply their own culture and identity into whatever form of dance they want to pursue. In this show, people will see community, people will see family, people will see youth and vibrancy, and people will see collaboration.”

McEwen expressed his deep appreciation for the support and guidance from the Dance Department for this production, especially from Dr. Andrea Salis, Professor and Chairperson, as well as Assistant Professors Emily Berry and Aviva Geismar.
