March 8 Marks 10th Anniversary of the Student Juried Art Exhibit
The 2018 Annual Student Juried Art Exhibit, featuring works by advanced Art & Design students will open at the QCC Art Gallery on March 8 through April 19, 2018.
Among the 40 outstanding works is a remarkable portrait called Gladys, painted by art student Paola Beniquez.
"This painting is a tribute to my mother and my grandmother who share the same name," said Paola. "This is the first time my work has been featured in the student exhibit and I am so honored to share my art with my friends and professors, many of whom have believed in me for so long." Paola added that, "The painting also serves as the face of my whole family, my friends and my island home.”
Also highlighted in the show are watercolors of human figures, self-portraits done with gouache on paper, abstract compositions with graphite, a series of collages of David Bowie, silver gelatin prints centered on people in different social and natural environments, oil on canvas of bridges, books and skulls, as well as works in marker on Bristol, and ink on paper.
“For ten years we have been proud to host the Student Juried Art Exhibit and each year is more exciting than the last, “said Faustino Quintanilla, Executive Director of the QCC Art Gallery. “This show presents an opportunity for outstanding, talented students to showcase the best of their very hard work. Gladys, for example, demonstrates Ms. Beniquez's confident use of color to capture subtle cool swatches of blue, violet and green to create a contrast instead of the usual light and dark.”
"Anton Chekov said there is nothing new in art except talent. I find this apropos for this year's show. Our students have once again set the bar high with their outstanding skill, drive and unique ideas. The works are fun; winking asides surface in collage works, while video animations run the gamut of playful abstract compositions to profound personal statements and astute political observations,” said Professor Anne Marie Coffey, Art & design. “We look forward to a great turnout!”
