Queensborough and the CUNY Dance Initiative Present a work-in-progress performance of Tiffany Mills Company’s new evening length work

Published: April 25, 2017

On May 5, 2017 at 8:00pm, Tiffany Mills Company previews its latest evening-length work at the Queensborough Community College Performing Arts Center as part of QCC’s Dance Residency Program through the Queensborough Student Association and the CUNY Dance Initiative.

Known for creating highly physical movement layered with emotional and psychological resonance, Tiffany Mills Company's newest work adopts a Dr. Seussian playfulness. The Company navigates terrain that revels in contrasts, embracing the idiosyncratic. This world is delineated by a box taped onto the floor, inside of which the performers don headphones and dodge kinetic foils. An eclectic array of music, from Sleater-Kinney to the Beastie Boys, accompanies this latest foray into an off-kilter existence. This work-in-progress is performed by Tiffany Mills, Jordan Morley, Kenneth Olguin, Nikolas Owens, Mei Yamanaka, with guest Emily Berry.

Completing the evening is "It Only Happens Once...Yesterday and Tomorrow", a 10-minute work created by Mills for QCC dance students. Inspired by a reoccurring dream and how each iteration takes on a life of its own, the varied sonic world (Basement Jaxx, Night Ark, Jan Jelinek, and Bexar Bexar) highlights this journey.

Tickets are available at the Queensborough Performing Arts Center Box Office, by calling 718-631-6311 and at the door. $5.00 for students/seniors and $10 General Admission.

Tiffany Mills Company residency at Queensborough Community College is part of the CUNY Dance Initiative (CDI), a university-wide residency program that opens the doors of CUNY campuses to professional choreographers and dance companies based in New York City.

Tiffany Mills Residency is made possible by the Queensborough Student Association Dance Residency and The CUNY Dance Initiative.

ABOUT THE CUNY DANCE INITIATIVE

The CUNY Dance Initiative was developed in response to the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s 2010 report, “We Make Do,” which cited how destabilizing the shortage of affordable rehearsal space in New York City is to the dance community. A successful pilot project underwritten by the New York Community Trust, supporting residencies and performances on four CUNY campuses in 2013, prompted CDI to expand its scope. Since its official launch in 2014, CDI has subsidized and facilitated a total of 67 residencies—from emerging choreographers to established dance companies—at 13 CUNY colleges in all five boroughs.

The CUNY Dance Initiative (CDI) receives major support from The Mertz Gilmore Foundation, the Howard Gilman Foundation, and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. Additional support provided by the Jerome Robbins Foundation and the Harkness Foundation for Dance. CDI is spearheaded and administered by The Kupferberg Center for the Arts at Queens College. www.cuny.edu/danceinitiative
