Queensborough’s Kupferberg Holocaust Resource Center and Archives announced an internship program beginning in the fall of 2012 for students to learn about the victims of aggression in Asia during World War II.
The internship program, co-sponsored by Korean American Civic Empowerment (KACE), will feature intern interviews with local Asian-American residents who were teenagers during World War II and suffered trauma during the occupation of their countries.
Dr. Diane B. Call, Interim President of Queensborough Community College, welcomed guests at the event and commended KACE for its valuable work in the community. “We congratulate KACE on joining with us to build and nurture this significant project.”
“Just as we have guaranteed our local Holocaust survivors that they and their stories will not be forgotten, we have partnered with members of the Asian survivors’ community to undertake a similar mission,” explained Dr. Arthur Flug, Executive Director of the Kupferberg Holocaust Resource Center and Archives.
“It is an honor to work with Dr. Flug on this important initiative,” said Dongchan Kim, president of KACE. “Together, we will encourage Asian seniors residing in the Queens community to come together to retell their stories and seek the recognition they deserve.”
Among those who attended the event was QCC student Hai Hua Wang, who is studying Business Management. He said, “This is my first time at the Kupferberg Center. I want to come back and learn more and will tell my friends to come with me.”
Another QCC student, Ming Ming, who is studying Business Administration, said one of her teachers recommended that she stop by to find out more. “I want to help spread the word about this great opportunity to get involved in something important."
Internship applications from students of all ages, ethnic backgrounds, and academic disciplines have tripled at the Kupferberg Holocaust Resource Center and Archives since the program’s inception in 2007.
