Student Tiffany Ivey Recognized by New York City Hispanic Chamber of Commerce

Published: December 10, 2012

Tiffany IveyTiffany Ivey, a Queensborough Community College student majoring in Health Related Sciences, was awarded a prestigious scholarship by the NYC Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Tiffany was among several honorees, including other City University of New York students, at the 7th Annual Hispanic Business Awards Banquet & Scholarship Ceremony on December 7.

“This generous scholarship is an honor for me, my family and the entire Hispanic community,” said Tiffany, who wants to give back to her community by starting a mobile unit offering free health screenings in underserved areas in Queens and Brooklyn.

Tiffany enrolled at Queensborough in spring 2011 to major in health related sciences. That summer, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and had to withdraw for medical treatment. She re-enrolled last spring to continue her studies and apply to Queensborough’s renowned nursing program.

“I know of QCC’s excellent nursing program from my mother, who is a clinical nurse manager at Jamaica Hospital in Queens,” she said. “Some of her colleagues are nursing instructors here and she has worked with QCC nursing students who perform clinical rotation at the hospital.”

Tiffany added that her interest in medicine is based on a passion for “hard science and the desire to reassure patients who need surgery.” She plans to become a nurse anesthesiologist. But her autistic son, Brian, has inspired her to consider a neurology specialty.

“Tiffany possesses the qualities we all admire and strive to emulate,” said Dr. Diane B. Call, Interim President, Queensborough Community College. “By embracing her life’s challenges, she has forged ahead to excel academically and achieve her goals.”

"Congratulations to Tiffany Ivey and the other CUNY scholarship winners who, through their hard work and determination, are laying the foundation for their future contributions to the city," said Nick Lugo, President, New York City Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Tiffany lives in Ridgewood, Queens. She plans to continue her education at Hunter College or York College.
