Career Mentoring Program

About the Career Mentoring Program

Queensborough Community College has graduated more than 45,000 students since 1962, many of whom have risen to the top of their respective fields. Recognizing the pivotal role mentoring plays in higher education, the College has piloted an ambitious project to involve alumni and professionals from the community in the lives and success of Career & Technical Education students.

Unlike advising, which focuses on attainment of skills required for academic success, mentoring focuses on human relationships and resources to guide students towards professional success.

Although mentors and mentees can meet face-to face, the program encourages interaction for discussion and communication through e-mail and phone. This provides the opportunity to improve the mentees' writing and speaking skills, which are also vital to the students' professional success. It also encourages more alumni participation as it minimizes time commitments and cost while providing maximum flexibility.
