Students transfer to Queensborough for our unique programs of study, reputation for academic excellence, location, and the opportunity presented for a more personal learning experience. As part of The City University of New York, our tuition continues to be the most affordable in the region – another advantage when planning your future.
Students come from colleges throughout the metropolitan area, New York State, around the country, and across the globe. With a degree from Queensborough, they can go almost anywhere.
SOME transfer students may need to take the CUNY/ACT Assessment Tests before they begin the advisement and registration process. Non-CUNY transfers may be exempt based on previous testing from high school (SAT/ACT or Regents) and/or completion of (or in progress) a minimum of 45 credits.* You will be notified if you need to take one or more of the CUNY/ACT Assessment tests.
* Certain restrictions apply.
TRANSFER CREDIT
Queensborough will grant transfer credit for most courses completed with satisfactory grades at an accredited post-secondary institution. (Grades of ‘C’ for non-CUNY colleges, and grades of ‘D’ from CUNY colleges are accepted.) Your credits will be evaluated and posted to your record. If a course needs further evaluation, you will be referred to the appropriate academic department. (Note: Admission to the Nursing program requires a minimum GPA of 2.75 in a specific pre-Clinical sequence; consult the college catalog for details.)
ADVISEMENT AND REGISTRATION
All incoming students are required to meet with an academic advisor prior to registration to establish an individualized academic plan (My Academic Plan: MAP). Appointments for advisement and registration are issued once the evaluation of all transcripts has been completed. Your accepted transfer credits will become the foundation for the courses you plan to take at Queensborough. The CUNY/ACT Assessment tests, if you are required to take one or more of these three tests, must be completed before you may attend your advisement and registration appointment.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FROM TRANSFER STUDENTS
I took college courses in high school. Will they transfer to Queensborough?
Yes. If you took courses for credit from an accredited institution, and if you received a passing grade, then you will receive credit. Please arrange to have an official transcript sent from the college(s) directly to our Admissions Office.
I completed and received an ‘A’ for a course equivalent to MATH 336 (Statistics) offered at Queensborough. Why am I now being referred to the Mathematics and Computer Science department for approval?
The academic departments must review and make decisions on the transferability of courses that parallel courses offered in their department. Although a course might have the same title, such as “Statistics,” the faculty must determine if the content is the same for both courses. To facilitate this course review process, try to provide the department with a course description from the college’s catalog.
I completed a college credit from an institution outside of the United States. Why are none of these credits posted on my record at Queensborough?
Credits for those students who have been educated at universities outside of the United States are evaluated by University Application Processing Center (UAPC). These specialists recommend which courses meet University guidelines and can be considered for transfer credit by the individual CUNY college. The final determination is made by the academic department at Queensborough.
I did not do well at my previous college. Will I be admitted to Queensborough?
Yes. You may be accepted as a full-time matriculated student on probation for one semester at Queensborough. During this semester, students on probation must achieve a minimum GPA of 2.0. Following completion of the first semester, the Admissions Review Committee will consider the semester performance. Should the student not have achieved the required minimum GPA of 2.0, they will lose their matriculated status and may continue their studies only as a non-matriculated (non-degree) student. (Note: Non-degree students pay a higher tuition rate and are not eligible for financial aid.)
Transfer students accepted on probation are expected to meet with a member of the Counseling Center during their first semester, and are encouraged to take full advantage of the many free tutoring and support services offered by the College.
Why do I have to take Writing Intensive courses at Queensborough? I took writing courses at my previous college.
This is a requirement for all matriculated students at Queensborough, and affects transfer students who were admitted to the College as of Fall 2005. The Writing Intensive courses have been designed to specifically strengthen writing skills across curricula. Completion of two courses (six credits) is a requirement for graduation.

How long does it take to have my transcript(s) evaluated?
Generally speaking, it takes up to three weeks for a complete evaluation of your transcripts. The evaluation process can be faster for those students who apply before April 15 for the fall semester and October 15 for the spring semester and for those students who have completed only a limited number of courses at one other college.
I was accepted into the Liberal Arts program at Queensborough, but I really want to be in the Business Administration curriculum. How do I make this switch and how do I have my credits re-evaluated for this program?
Students are admitted into the curriculum they designated on their application. You may change your choice of study by submitting a form with the Registrar’s Office. The courses taken at your previous college(s) are then re-evaluated for the newly selected curriculum. Reminder: courses are accepted only if they are applicable to a specific program. Therefore, based on your intended curriculum, more or less credit may be accepted. We recommend that curriculum changes be made prior to the start of the upcoming semester.
I completed more than 50 credits at my prior college. Why didn’t all of these credits transfer to Queensborough?
Queensborough will accept no more than 30 credits from any institution towards its associate degree, and no more than 15 credits toward a certificate. These credits must meet requirements of the curriculum into which the student has been accepted.
How do I transfer into Queensborough’s Nursing program?
To be considered for admission to the College’s Nursing program, all students must first complete a pre-clinical sequence of English, Psychology, Sociology, and Anatomy and Physiology. The minimum required GPA is 2.75 for consideration of admission. Whether these courses were taken at a previous college or at Queensborough, they can NOT be repeated.
I have 15 years of work experience. How do I apply for life experience credit?
Due to the specific requirements for our degree and certificate programs, the College does not award life experience credit.

Do I have to take the CUNY/ACT Assessment Test?
Transfer students do NOT have to take the CUNY/ACT Assessment tests in Reading, Writing, or Mathematics if they:
- Took this test at another CUNY college;
- Achieved certain grades on specific New York State Regents exams and/or scores of the SAT or ACT exams;
- Completed 45 or more credits at an accredited non-CUNY college in the United States or at a college outside of the United States where the language of instruction is English.
I took and passed six credits of Freshmen English. Why isn’t Queensborough giving me credit for this course?
When a transfer student needs to complete a remedial course in reading and writing, based on the results of the CUNY/ACT Assessment test, credit for English is granted only after successful completion of remediation and a passing grade on the CUNY/ACT Exit from Remediation exam.
Do you accept CLEP or DANTES examinations for college credit?
Interested students should first consult with the chairperson of the appropriate department to learn about guidelines for credit acceptance for these exams.
I attended a proprietary school. Will I receive transfer credit for the work I did there?
Credit is granted for only those proprietary schools who are regionally accredited or accredited by the New York State Regents. Credit is given for courses passed with a grade of ‘C’ that meet curricular requirements.
What action may I take if I disagree with the evaluation done by Queensborough of my previous college credit?
Students have a right to question their evaluation. Re-evaluation of credit is usually done at the beginning of each semester by the Transfer Evaluator Specialist. Referrals may be made to the appropriate academic departments.
