STAY CONNECTED
- Read letters and
other correspondence from Queensborough. Don’t throw
anything away before reading it. If you do, you may miss
critical information.
- Check your email.
Every student at Queensborough has a free email account. (Visit
the college website to learn more.) You may have an important
message from the college.
- Your professors
are your greatest resource on campus. Get to know them, and
let them get to know you. DON’T wait until late in
the semester to seek help with a class. If you are having
difficulties in a class, don’t wait to seek their
advice. They can guide your success in current classes,
and, later your professors are a good source for letters
of recommendation and career advice.
- If you have questions,
ask for answers. DON’T just sit in your class and
pretend you understand a lecture or discussion. DO raise
your hands, ask questions, ask for clarification. This
is why you are in college.
TAKE ACTION
Go for
academic advisement. Before the start of each semester, speak with an advisor
or academic counselor. They are professionals who will help
you to become and continue to be a successful student. Advisement
is available in the Academic Advisement Office (L-421) and
the Counseling Center (L-428).
Understand
what “plagiarism” is! If you are unclear about what is considered “plagiarism,” or
any behavior on exams or assignments that could be classified
as academic dishonesty, discuss your questions with your
professors.
If you
must withdraw from any class, BE SMART! Speak to a counselor or advisor before you
withdraw. Also, contact a Financial Aid counselor to find
out how a course withdrawal may affect your financial aid.
(WHY? If you walk away from a class without official withdrawing,
you receive a grade of “WU.” You do not want
this grade as it negatively affects your academic average!
(WHY? Withdrawing due to a
medical or disability reason?
Speak first with a counselor from the Homebound Program.
You may receive assistance that can help you maintain your
student status. If you must withdraw for medical reasons,
contact the Health Services Office to insure that you receive
a medical withdrawal.)
Use
the Counseling Center. If you are experiencing personal problems, issues with your
family, feeling depressed, angry, or overwhelmed , you are
not alone. Visit the Counseling Center (L-428). The counselors,
all trained professional, will help you address your concerns.
Often, when students experience personal problems, their
grades are the first things that suffer. Don’t let
that happen to you.
File
early for financial aid. Visit our Financial Aid Office (Library, Room L-406). Remember:
you may file for aid online. The address is www.FAFSA.Ed.gov.
International
(F1) Students. See the International Student Advisor (Library, Room ) if
you have transferred to Queensborough from another school
and do not have a QCC 120, before you withdraw from a class,
or before you travel outside of the United States.
