Course Description in college catalog:

This course emphasizes authentic texts, more complex grammar, and practice in oral and written expression. Social and historical topics of Spanish- speaking countries presented through literary texts, film and multimedia will form the basis for discussion and writing assignments. Weekly listening, speaking and viewing activities online or in the language laboratory are part of the course.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  2. Formulate opinions; make judgments, in conversation and writing, on selected issues from authentic materials presented in class.
  3. Summarize a narrative text, or create your own brief narrative orally and in writing
  4. Write reports in Spanish following the steps of the writing process

Methods by which student learning will be assessed and evaluated; describe the types of methods to be employed; note whether certain methods are required for all sections:

  1. Students’ speaking abilities will be assessed by evaluating your level of comprehensibility and fluency, and your use of vocabulary in completing communicative tasks or oral narrations/presentations. 
  2. Students’ listening comprehension abilities will be assessed by evaluating your understanding of oral messages including advertisements, weather broadcasts, warnings, etc.
  3. Students’ reading skills will be assessed by evaluating your understanding of newspapers articles, short stories, excerpts from literary passages, and any other authentic reading material.
  4. Students’ writing skills (including knowledge of grammar) will be assessed by evaluating the level of comprehensibility and lexical/grammatical accuracy of your written samples consisting of descriptions, narrations, or summaries.
