Need an IRS transcript? - Financial Aid

Tax filers can request a transcript, free of charge, for their tax return from the IRS in one of three ways:

  1. Online request
    1. Go to www.irs.gov.
    2. Under the Tools section of the homepage click “Order a Tax Return or Account Transcript”.
    3. Under Step 3 Go Get Your Transcript, click on “Order a Transcript”.
    4. Fill in SS#, date of birth, street address and zip code or postal code.  Use the address currently on file with the IRS.
    5. Click “Continue”.
    6. In the Type of Return field, select “ Return Transcript” and in the Tax Year field, select 2012.
    7. If successfully validated, tax filer can expect to receive a paper IRS Tax Return Transcript at the address included in their online request, within 5 to 10 days from the time the on-line request was successfully transmitted to the IRS.
    8. IRS Tax Return Transcripts requested on-line cannot be sent directly to a third party by the IRS.
  2. Telephone Request
    1. Call 1-800-908-9946.
    2. Follow prompts for SS# & address.
    3. Select “Option 2” to request transcript & enter “2012”.
    4. If successfully validated, tax filer can expect to receive a paper transcript within 5 to 10 days.

    1.  Download form at: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506tez.pdf.
    2. Complete lines 1-4.
    3. Line 5 provides tax filers with the option to have their transcript mailed directly to a third party.
    4. Mail or fax to the appropriate address or fax number.
    5. Can expect to receive the transcript within 5 to 10 days from the time IRS receives/processes the signed request.
