Research Interests:
My research interests are in twentieth-century American literature; American cultural studies; critical university studies; poetics.
Teaching philosophy:
I think that the classroom should never be isolated from the lives we lead, and so I try to create connections among our reading, writing, and everyday experiences. I emphasize that critical thinking and effective writing and speaking are more than important skills; they offer opportunities for civic engagement and personal growth. At the same time, I think that laughter can be an important part of learning, and I always try to engage students' goals and expectations. I incorporate assignments to find out why students are here, what they hope to achieve, and what opportunities and challenges they see, and I use these assignments to make our other work together more meaningful Queensborough students bring an inspiring enthusiasm and amazing diversity of experience and background to every class, and that's something I try to harness for all our benefit.
