Teaching Philosophy

I believe that the true meaning of teaching should extend beyond the classroom. I believe that the development of a faculty member in a teaching institution such as Queensborough must involve the students. I am an ardent supporter of frequent testing (as many as seven per semester plus final) and believe in the ability of our better students to conduct class workshops (similar to the recitations graduate students conduct) for the courses they have just completed. I frequently take my students to the American Chemical Society seminars as well as other talks by invited faculty and require that they submit a written summary of the talk. I also believe that a student masters the problem only when he/she works it out on the blackboard and is forced to explain the answer to the rest of the class. Conducting supervised research, however miniscule this may be, is the best path to the student’s academic maturity as he/she will be able to use judgment in decision making and data interpretation.
