Teaching Philosophy:

In my view, one of the greatest misconception students have about learning is that they are only capable of studying, or they should only explore, the material given by the instructor on a given topic in the classroom. I strongly advocate students to explore beyond the textbook and have an appreciation for other resources such as journal articles and scientists’ current research. I do not believe that lecturing solely to a classroom can instill knowledge, or more importantly curiosity. Student participation is equally critical. Whenever possible, I encourage students to work in small groups, where they can not only develop leadership skills but also develop how to work effectively in a team and can constructively make mistakes and learn from each other. In addition, I believe in problem solving on the blackboard. Equally important to acquiring problem solving skills is for students to develop the ability to read, interpret and question material being taught to them. Moreover, I believe that students need to develop skills in documenting experimental observations in their lab notebook during the course of their experiment. I think this should be encouraged more in laboratory courses, for this practice develops organization and observational skills and also can develop active critical thinking. Over the years, I have (and will always continue to) strengthened my passion to learn and educate. I know that survival in our society requires more than the knowledge we acquire from textbooks. Valuable skills such as team participation, leadership, critical thinking, problem solving and possessing an active curiosity of our world, are not only essential for personal survival and growth but also for the improvement of our society.

Research Interests:

I- I am presently interested in the manipulation and utilization of nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes and nanowires. More specifically:

  1. The purification and functionalization of nanomaterials with organic and inorganic moieties by basic wet chemistry techniques. I have a continued interest in investigating the effects of various purification processes on the structural and electronic properties of carbon nanotubes. In addition, effective synthesis method of attaching the least complex organic or inorganic linkages for further application purposes must be investigated to ensure minimum destruction to the properties of the nanotubes or nanowires.
  2. The characterization of the functionalized nanostructures by various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques, such as FTIR, UV-Vis, GC/MS, NMR, NEXAFS, and SEM.

II- I am also interested in optimizing the learning outcomes of undergraduate students in studying chemistry at a fundamental level. I am specifically interested in investigating the use of active learning and art related topics to better teach community college students the science of chemistry.
