Group Leader

Description: • Facilitate participants’ transition from the school day to the after-school program, oversee snack distribution, and transitions into activities • Assist youth with their homework, and help ensure that the homework gets done • Lead weekly activities for participants in 6th-8th grades, and submit weekly lesson plans • Maintain effective classroom management that encourages full participation and student growth • Supervise groups of children while maintaining their physical and emotional safety and health • Assist Activity Specialists and Teachers while they conduct activities • Keep careful records of student attendance • Keep track of supplies used for activities • Stay in close communication with Program Director and Assistant Director via phone and email regarding programmatic changes or any other issues or concerns • Participate in monthly staff meetings and staff development sessions throughout the school year • Provide other program support as needed • Participate in program evaluations and provide input on program improvement

Salary $18-$20 per hour, based on experience

Special Skills & Requirements • Strong interest in connecting with culturally diverse group of youth, and building relationships with them • Highly responsible and reliable; good team player • Must be very organized, and be capable of modelling organization to participants • Must be flexible, creative, and willing to adapt to the changing needs of students and the program • Excellent verbal, written and communications skills • Desire to effect positive social and academic change in the lives of NYC youth • Minimum two years of college, preferably in Education or related field • Must have previous experience leading groups of children or youth in an educational or recreational setting • Must complete and pass background checks and be fingerprinted for DOH and DOE • If hired, applicants must complete free NYS Mandated Reporter training in Child Abuse Identification and Reporting • If hired, applicants are required to attend professional development workshops prior to beginning work throughout the school year • Must be available to work Monday – Friday, 2:15 – 6:00 pm, and occasionally on weekends.

SONYC (School’s Out NYC) is DYCD’s expansion and re-branding of its middle school afterschool programs formerly known as Out-of-School Time (OST). The program is open to 6th – 8th graders, and runs from 2:40-6:00 on Mondays – Friday. Participants choose to participate in activities in areas such as physical education, STEM, Literacy, art, and leadership. All activities take place at our host school in Jamaica, Queens.
