Description:

Athena LaTocha, born in Anchorage, Alaska, is a painter pursuing interests in landscape and land art. Leaving Alaska, LaTocha moved to Canton, NY to study anthropology at St. Lawrence University. During her time there, she decided to pursue art and received several scholarships to attend the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Shortly thereafter, she moved to New York and was awarded a fellowship and teaching scholarship to complete a Master of Fine Arts degree at Stony Brook University. In 2013, LaTocha was the recipient of the prestigious Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Residency. She was awarded a full fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center, and between 2008 through 2015 she was artist-in-residence at chashama. at the Brooklyn Army Terminal in New York. LaTocha's work has been shown in places such as the CUE Art Foundation, Artist's Space, Wilmer Jennings Gallery, Chelsea Art Museum, Gallery SENSEI, and the Patchogue Art Center in New York, New York State Museum, the Dahl Art Center in South Dakota, the South Dakota Art Museum, and the Journey Museum in North Dakota. She has upcoming exhibitions at the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse, New York and the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She currently divides her time between New York City and Peekskill, NY.
