Description:

STEM Academy & Chemistry Department Seminar Series Present Dr. Marcel Roberts John Jay College of Criminal Justice of CUNY Chemical Identification of Synthetic Cannabinoids in Herbal Incense Products

The emergence of synthetic cannabinoids is an ongoing challenge for forensic, clinical analytical chemists and toxicologists. Different analogs are continuously introduced in the market to circumvent the legislation and to enhance their pharmacological activity.  The low cost of manufacture and purchase has caused an epidemic in low income communities.  In the present project, a total of seven synthetic cannabinoids were identified in four herbal incense products by employing a combination of FTIR_ATR, GCMS, and LCMSMS. Result showed that five out of seven synthetic cannabinoids were classified as indazole carboxamide derivatives, which include 5F-EMB PINACA, 5F-AMB, MA-Chminaca, AB-Chminaca, and 5F-AKB-48. The remaining two belong to the naphtholindoles and tetramethylcyclopropylcarbonylindoles class, NM-2201 and XLR-11, respectively.

The event is sponsored by the Science Research Alliance Club, Biology Club, STEM Research Club, Student Affiliates of the ACS, PTK, ASAP, CSTEP Club, SACNAS QCC Chapter, Health club, Women in Science club, Korean Student Association, Environmental Sustainability Club and the Haitian Club. All are invited to attend, QCC ID Required, Food will be served.
