CANCELED: Mock Presidential Debate

Start Date: November 01 2012 - 04:00 PM

End Date: November 01 2012 - 06:00 PM

Category: Student Activities

Location: Medical Arts Building, Room 136

Six days before Election 2012, Queensborough Community College students will assume the roles of the presidential candidates and debate their final positions on the economy, healthcare, immigration, education, and more.

Students from the Mock Trial Team have been studying the campaigns, candidates and issues, and will present the debate as candidates, moderator, and journalists. Each candidate will have two minutes to answer a question; the opposing candidates are allowed a one-minute rebuttal.

Richalin Rodney, majoring in Business Administration, will portray Governor Mitt Romney. “I think this event will help people to better understand the nature of politics and how important it is to vote,” she said.

“We’ve worked hard to thoroughly research the candidates’ positions—the origins of their decisions and how their plans would affect us,” said Shirley Aguilar, a liberal arts student who will represent President Barack Obama. “It’s a great privilege to be able to share our knowledge, understanding and hard work with our audience so that voters can make an informed choice."

Shirley was awarded a “2011 Regional Outstanding Witness Award” at the American Mock Trial Association New Haven Regional tournament at Yale University held in February of this year.

“Young people today realize they have a lot at stake in the election that will decide who will lead our country for the next four years,” said Professor Ted Rosen, a member of the Business Department Faculty and  one of the advisors/coaches for the Mock Trial Team.  “It is important for them - and they want - to have a firm grasp of the responses by the candidates to the issues that will have a big impact on their lives.”

Queensborough’s Mock Trial Team boasts a remarkably diverse group of students who range in age from 18-55 with many hailing from countries around the world.

The Mock Presidential Debate follows the Mock GOP Primary debate, presented in March 2012, where students presented the platforms of Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, and Rick Santorum.
